The Berghaus Layering System

Whether you are moving over rugged terrain, or enjoying a hike through the backcountry it is important to understand how dressing correctly can make a difference between enjoying the mountain or being desperate to get back inside. When exposed to the cold the body loses heat to the atmosphere; if this were allowed to continue unabated hypothermia would set in as the body’s core temperature would drop dangerously low. So follow our layering system to make sue you are warm, dry and happy when you are out.

Comfort layer: The first layer in the system is the clothing next to the skin. Perspiration drying on your skin can easily chill you. By keeping your body dry, you’ll also keep it comfortable. Berghaus Tech-T and X-static® fibre base layers are perfect for providing next-to-the-skin comfort. These also make great layers on their own in the warmer weather.

Warmth layer: The second layer in the system, allowing you to regulate your body temperature by putting on or taking off garments as necessary. Garments should be lightweight, warm and dry quickly helping you to keep in body heat. They should also let your perspiration vapour escape from the comfort layer underneath (retaining their insulating properties even when wet). All Berghaus fleece jackets made from Polartec® make ideal warmth layer clothing.

Protection layer: This is the outer layer in our three-layer system. Waterproof and windproof it keeps out the worst of the weather. It is also highly breathable therefore letting perspiration vapour escape easily from lower layers. A jacket from the Berghaus Aquafoil® or Gore-Tex® ranges would be ideal.
