The weight of the Berghaus Temperance is particularly impressive, and when combined with the price it offers amazing value.
For your 468g and £230 you get a top-notch fabric in the form of Gore-Tex Pro Shell. The jacket then has a fairly conventional layout of a front zip and two large chest pockets. The chest pockets are high enough to avoid waistbelts and climbing harnesses too, which makes them ideal for warming hands or stashing gear on the move.
There are pit zips in case you overheat and cannot remove your jacket for some reason. The hood is particularly good too thanks to a large stiffened peak, and excellent fit and movement. Good movement in the sleeves is also provided, which makes this great for mountaineering.
This jacket is a clean and simple design that would be ideal for general mountain use at any time of the year. But other waterpoof jackets do have some better features than the Berghaus Temperance, such as an external stormflap over the zips for water resistance in the wet British winter. Also you do only get two pockets, while others have more. The fabric is lightweight, which means it will tend to compress easily and hence squash out warm air. Other jackets may resist abrasion better too.
