With time and use, your jacket’s waterproofness may degrade

You’ve spent many an hour researching your perfect waterproof jacket and you have now bought your waterproof jacket but what’s next…

After many outdoor adventures, and over a period of time your waterproof jacket can be pushed to the limit from the natural environment, so it’s vital you keep it protected and maintain its waterproofness.

If you would like to find out more about waterproofness, make sure you check out our guide which explains what is waterproof?

During the manufacturing process a durable water-repellant (DWR) finish is applied to the outer surface of your waterproof clothing. The DWR prevents the fabric from absorbing moisture and creates a beading effect when in contact with water.

Throughout the months, and after high volumes of outdoor activity, the DWR finish can wear off on the parts that come under regular contact when on the move. For example on the sides of our jacket, where we walk and sway our arms whilst hiking or trekking, or the arms of the garment when we are on a climbing expedition. This means we need to re-proof our waterproof jacket every so often to ensure we stay drier for longer.

You can re-proof your waterproof jacket with a wide variety of cleaning and protection products, including Nikwax, which we have explained below.

We also feature a variety of guides which further explain what waterproofing is all about.

What is Nixwax waterproof treatment?

Berghaus sell a range of Nikwax treatments, which contains elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to the fibres of your jacket, leaving the spaces between open and breathable so it’s just as great as the day you bought it. Using Nikwax treatments such as Nikwax® TX Direct Wash-In and Nikwax® Tech Wash will not affect the look or feel of your waterproof jacket and more importantly won’t affect the breathability.

Caring for your waterproof is something we are passionate about and we want you to make sure that you have all of the information you need to do so at your fingertips. At Berghaus we are passionate about the outdoors and about the people who love the outdoors and therefore aim to provide as much information as possible.

Keep topping up on the Nikwax when required and make sure that you enjoy your time outside.
