Mick Fowler – 25 June

There is something very special about the North Cornwall shale coast. In the car driving down Dave Turnbull and I were bemoaning the fact that the forecast wasn’t good enough for our intended visit to Cape Wrath. By the end of the weekend the shale had worked its magic. Dust blackened faces smiled, Cape Wrath was not being mentioned and the talk was of how we could have left such a long gap between visits.

When we met up with Steve Sustad in Boscastle we had never heard of Cam Beak, the headland just south of Crackington Haven.

By the end of the day the cliff (that we had spotted from the coastal footpath as looking ‘worth a visit’) had given a memorable three pitch climb on outrageously stratified rock.

We are very lucky in Britain. Adventure climbing possibilities are far from exhausted. Life is good.
