On May 5, 2012 at approximately 4:45pm, Berghaus athlete Julia Pickering and her team of splitboarders and skiers successfully summited Mount Bear. At 14,831 ft (4,520 m) Mount Bear is one of the top 20 highest mountains in the US, nestled deep in the Wrangell-Saint Elias Mountains.
Julia and her team battled fierce conditions of -45 degrees Celsius at the summit having already dealt with frost bite, crevasse falls and a six day storm. It’s no wonder Julia describes her Alaskan expedition as “An epic adventure filled drama”.
Their successful summit marks the first snowboard ascent and descent of Mount Bear and a film on the expedition will be out later this year; in the meantime you can watch the trailer of Julia with husband Warwick and their huskies training for their expedition to Alaska here:
