Berghaus athletes Team Orion, an adventure racing team that has been crowned world champion twice, are heading to China to tackle the Wulong Mountain Quest, an exclusive competition limited to 25 elite teams.

The team has a fresh line up in 2010, with Fleur Pawsey, Nathan Petersen and Carl Bevins joining existing members Brent Edwards and Stuart Lynch. The team competes in races in which the competitors navigate a course by completing stages in various disciplines, including mountain biking, kayaking, trekking and navigation. Races also incorporate specialist challenges such as swimming, coasteering (coastal running), shooting, rope work, rock climbing, rafting and even rollerblading.

The Wulong Mountain Quest will be held between 4 and 6 September, near Chongqing. The event has established itself as the most prestigious adventure race in Asia, and one of the most prestigious in the world. This year marks the eighth running of the race, which takes in the spectacular landscape of Wulong County in southern China.

The Wulong Mountain Quest is a three stage race for teams of four, with a daily racing time of between six and nine hours. The race incorporates technical mountain biking on single track trails, with steep descents and long uphill sections. In addition, competitors will be doing a lot of running along mountain trails, through narrow gorges and on the top of enormous cliffs For more on the Wulong Mountain Quest visit www.wulongquest.com

After gaining the lead in the Australian XPD adventure race Team Orion had to pull out during the last stages after one of team captain Brent’s numerous leach bites became infected, following an overnight stay in a leach infested rainforest.

The adventure race began on the 17th May with the team trekking, mountain biking and kayaking over a 700km course spread over 11 days. Their withdrawal from the race was a huge disappointment for the team since it looked positive that the team would walk away as XPD race champions.
