Everyday Adventurer Elaine Hibbs – Working for The Outward Bound Trust

I have been working for The Outward Bound Trust since 2005. It’s a completely inspiring place and I’m privileged to have found a career which I thoroughly enjoy and which brings so much energy and positive impact to the young people that come into contact with us.

I’m 31 years old and grew up in Surrey. My first experience of the outdoors was the Duke of Edinburgh’s award at school. I vividly remember finishing the Gold expedition, throwing my bag down and promising myself that I’d never have to carry a bag like that again… As with most students, I didn’t realise at the time how important those few days were to me and what they would eventually lead to. It’s a real joy to me that I am now an expedition assessor and I am able to help students through the same life changing experiences that opened up my eyes to the outdoors.

In my own time I enjoy being in the hills and exploring new places. I love setting off and not really knowing where I’ll end up and what I’ll see. I enjoy following my nose and discovering what’s out there. I’m a keen gardener and grow my own vegetables on my little allotment in Penrith and that’s often where you’ll find me when I’ve had a long week at work!

This summer will be my fourth classic course at Ullswater. Each one brings a mixture of apprehension and excitement. Apprehension because I don’t know anything about the 16-18 year olds who I will share those 3 weeks with and excitement for all the adventures that they will experience and the journey that they will go on together as they learn about themselves and what they are capable of. The Classic Adventure aims to give students not only a chance to take part in all of the outdoor adventures that we can deliver, but also a personal journey of self discovery that will hopefully, at such an important age in their lives, inform their decisions and behaviour as they become the next generation of adults. It will be hard work for all of us, but I am very much looking forward to meeting them all and getting started.
