Arran Shell

Having owned the Arran 3 in 1 for a while my wife commandeered the shell for dog walking. I ordered another Arran Shell for myself. It's not interactive so doesn't have the second row of zips that couple the fleece to the shell but it's still a great all weather jacket for all terrain and such good value compared to the other brands. Well done Berghaus.

Christmas present for me

New jacket to replace my old one (only two bought olin thirty years that’s how good the quality is)  Love the new jacket and look forward to testing it out on our little Welsh mountains.

Must have jacket!

The Arran jacket is incredible in so many ways. Its lightweight, very easy to move around in (zero arm restriction) and the workmanship is of the highest quality. The added bonus of the red colour will give me much more visibility on winter treks. I wouldn't be without this jacket.

Arran jacket

An easy and safe buy, high quality on the jacket. I was surprised when I got it - it was even better tha I expected. What I miss in the information is a comparison between the Hydroshell and Gore-Tex. The latter being the more well known and I almost expect it to be in any modern waterproof garment. So a clear comparison between the two would most likely make me even more confident in buying something made of Hydroshell.

OK for light rain but not for a heavy shower

I walk my dog every morning regardless of the weather. After 2-3 months living with this jacket I know most of it's idiosyncrasies. On the plus side, it's great in a cold wind and the high collar protects the neck nicely. The hood is large but can be adjusted to fit tightly over a wooden hat. In a light shower, it's fine.   On the down side, it doesn't seem to breath at all. If it's cold and wet and windy, I have to keep the front zipped up which means sweat accumulates in the armpits and sleeves. The sleeves also seem vulnerable to the rain.  On the lighter top parts of the jacket the rain beads but the lower dark pieces seem to absorb the water. On a light rainy day it's OK for one to one and a half hours before it's damp inside. In a heavy rain and strong wind and hard walking, I was getting cold and damp in half an hour. I had to tumble dry it as soon as I got home. I wear a marino teeshirt and a thin fleece underneath and begin the walk feeling the cold. After 20 mins or so I've warmed up and I'm having to open the zip as I feel the dampness begin in the armpits. I'm sure Berghaus make jackets that you can wear all day in wind and rain but I'm not sure this is one.

tight under arms and generaly dissapointing

The quality appears less than that of my 15 year old Beghaus jacket. Under the arms there is no room at all. Wearing a thin cotton shirt and a Berghause Men's Prism Micro Polartec Interactive Fleece Jacket I feel restricted. To go another size up would make the already long sleeves intolerably longer. Pockets are adequate. The hood has poppers at each end which have to be released before stowing in the collar. The hood peak has a wire insert which is described in the 'In a nutshell' paragraph as being stiffened. I have noticed much of the wording in the descriptions is either vague or inadequate. My allegiance to Berghause is being sorely tested. I will be looking for an alternative over the next few days.

The Arran jacket is ...

The Arran jacket is both stylish and reasonably light weight. I got a size L and the size is a little too large. I don't mind the extra size, since I usually wear a sweater or a thin down jacket underneath when it's cold. The sleeves are slightly long but I find it gives me greater reach and motion especially if I'm on my bike or if I wearing warm clothes underneath. Adjustable cuffs makes it easy to get a comfortable fit. Inner and outer breast pockets and two large side pockets gives me all the pocket space I need. The zippers have membranes and are waterproof. The removable hood is adjustable and can be rolled up in the collar. This is the best rain jacket I have ever owned.. The side and breast pocket zippers does have membranes, but time will tell how waterproof they are. I do wish they had storm flaps though.

Like the colour and ...

Like the colour and the waterproofing.. Look into the position of the pocket zip, its the second jacket I've had that the zip has broken.
